What is an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and where it is?

The ACL ligament is one of two cruciate ligaments located inside your knee joint. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament is positioned over the PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament), they cross each other in the form of X. With the PCL, the ACL first role is to hold the Femur (Thighbone) together with the Tibia (Shinbone). ACL and PCL are responsible for knee stability, as we move our knee forwards or backwards.

How an ACL tear may happen?

In most cases, ACL Ligament tear or sprain occurs when your knee is overly extended, or following a sudden unusual movement. Torn ACL happens often in sports like Soccer, Football, Basketball or Hockey. Anterior Cruciate Ligament sprains are classified according o three severity grades:

1. Level 1 or mild ACL tear: in this case, the ligament is stretched, but no major damage has occurred.
2. Level 2 or moderately torn ACL: the ligament is partially torn. When Level 2 ligament sprain happens, your knee becomes bit loose and swollen.
3. Level 3: your ligament has a complete tear. In this case, your knee is completely unstable.

When to use an ACL brace?

ACL brace can be used for prevention, especially by athletes playing physically demanding sports like Ski, Soccer, Basketball, Football or Hockey. An ACL knee brace is also recommended for Level 1 and Level 2 knee ligament sprain, to help in stabilizing your knee, to accelerate your healing and to alleviate swelling. Even if level 3 knee sprain may need a ligament reconstruction knee surgery, you may also need a Post-op ACL knee brace for recovery.
