How to wash a wig: tips for synthetic and human hair wigs

Washing and drying your wig: step by step

Exactly like a real hair, wigs need to be washed regularly, but not on a daily basis. Here is how you should do it:

After watching our tutorial video, you can also follow steps below to wash your wig.

Step 1: preparation

Before you start washing your wig, be sure to prepare the following items:

  1. Dry towel.
  2. Wig stand.
  3. Synthetic or human hair wig shampoo.
  4. Synthetic or human hair wig conditioner.
  5. Synthetic or human hair wig detangler.
  6. A specialized wig comb with wide teeth.

Step 2: Detangle

Just like real hair, untangle any strands by carefully combing your wig using a wide tooth comb. Do so beginning from the ends. For better results, use a Wigs Detangler.

Step 3: Wet your wig

This is the tricky part. Experts have a difference of opinion on how to wet a synthetic hair wig:

  1. Method 1: submerge the entire wig in a basin of lukewarm water.
  2. Method 2: rinse your wig before shampooing under the tap with lukewarm water.

We suggest to use the second method.

To wet human hair wig:

Using cool water gently wet the human hair wig. Do not submerge it into the water.

Step 4: Shampoo

Follow below tips to apply shampoo:

  1. Place a dab of shampoo to your hand. Be sure to use a synthetic wig shampoo for synthetic wigs, and human hair wig shampoo for Remy or human hair wigs.
  2. Evenly distribute it from the roots to the tips.
  3. Place another dab of shampoo to your hand.
  4. Lightly rub it inside the wigs cap by doing circular motions to avoid damaging it.

Step 5: Rinse

Let cool water run through the hair. It is important that the water flows in the same direction of the hair. This will prevent unwanted tangling. Ensure shampoo is removed to avoid buildup of leftover product that can lead to a greasy and matted look.

Step 6: Apply a conditioner

It is strongly recommended to apply conditioner to both synthetic wigs and human hair wigs. Apply short portions of conditioner on your hair. Always use a conditioner for wigs.

Note: If you decide to use spray conditioners, be sure to spray it at least 10 inches away from the wig for you to achieve the best results.

Step 7: Dry

Utmost care is needed when drying wigs. You should NEVER:

  • Wring or twisting the water out of a wig
  • Drying it in direct sunlight
  • Use a hair blower

Simply pat and press the hair using a soft towel to remove excess water. Then place it on a upright position on top of a tall, slender object, preferably a wig stand.

Other caring techniques for human hair wigs

You may be infrequently washing and conditioning your human hair wigs, but you should hydrate it on a daily basis with a leave-on conditioner. Unlike real hair that produces oils from the scalp to keep it hydrated, human hair wigs does not have that capacity.
