Gone are the days when people wear wigs solely because of hair loss problem. Today, both men or women can enjoy wearing a wig only to change style or hair color. However, a common question comes very often to their spirit: What is the better choice, should I choose a human hair wig or a synthetic wig? What is the main difference between these two types of wigs?

Cost wise: Synthetic hair wigs win

Of course, wearing natural hair wigs is the preferred choice for many women, if and only if you have the money to pay for it.

Wigs made from human hair are more expensive compared to synthetic hair wigs. Per example, wigmakers pay $80 or more per ounce for virgin hair, which has never been dyed or penned; a wig requires at least 4 oz (113.4 g) of hair (Source: madehow.com). Making synthetic fibers would be much cheaper.

Styling options: Human hair wigs win

There are limitations when styling synthetic wigs. Many of them cannot even be styled to avoid damages to synthetic fibers. On the other hand, wigs made from natural true hair allow user to benefit from many styling options.

How to style a human hair wig

A human hair wig can and must be washed. When caring for a wig, synthetic or human hair, just make sure you use the right care products. Also be sure to follow the proper way of washing it to avoid damaging hair and cap. For more information about washing a wig, see our blog here...

After washing, it can be:

  • Blow-dried
  • Curled
  • Flat-ironed
  • Crimped

Disclaimer: thanks to new technologies, some synthetically-made heat resistant wigs can now be styled with special styling appliances, like the Fiery or the Judi  heat resistant wigs.

Color: Human hair wigs win

Synthetically created wigs are made from manufactured fibers to replicate as close as possible the real human hair. Even if some high end synthetic wigs made by recognized brands look almost like a reaI hair, however they may fail to capture the real shine and retain the true color of a true hair. Thus, the need to apply additional specialized products to it such as a holding Spray or a detangler.

Comfort: Both wigs win

Some people think that wearing wigs is uncomfortable. Well, it depends!

A synthetic or human hair wig made with a superior quality wig cap, lace front or monofilament, can be very comfortable. However, be sure to pick a wig that is made by a recognized wig brand, like Jon Renau or Ellen Wille.

Durability: Depends on the user

Which type of wigs lasts longer? Actually, no matter if it is a synthetic or a human hair wig, the life of your wig would depend on how you care for it:

How to take care of your wig

Following these basic guidelines may help your wig to last longer:

  • Be sure to follow the right storing indications as prescribed by wig manufacturer
  • Wash your wig from time to time, by following wigs washing best practices
  • Avoid overexposing it to extreme heat
  • Use styling products designed for wigs
  • Refrain from combing it from the base

Conclusion:

The scoring board surely favors human hair wigs. But as mentioned earlier, the cost is higher. If a real hair wig does not fit within your budget, then you can still go for a synthetic wig. Both wigs will most definitely serve you well.
